The demand for tequila has increased, but the supply is becoming scarcer
While Europe’s openness to the popular Mexican drink has been gradually increasing since the pandemic, agave stocks are limited, so tequila is expensive for now. In fact, if this continues, it will become even more expensive. The volume of exports to Spain jumped by 90 percent last year, the French imported 73 percent, the British 68 percent, and the Germans 60 percent more than a year earlier, VG.hu points out in its recent article.
The pan-European expansion exceeds the 23 percent global growth. The volume of exports to the mentioned countries increased by an average of 60 percent in 2021. Global sales volume for tequila grew 15 percent in the second half of 2022, far outstripping the 3 percent rise in total spirits sales. Mexican tequila accounted for 11 percent of net sales, Don Julio grew by 26 percent, and Casamigos by 29 percent, the liquor giant Diageo announced in January, according to information from VG.hu.
