With the Easter holidays approaching, the National Trade and Consumer Protection Authority (NKFH) and the government agencies under its professional management will launch a comprehensive spring food safety and consumer protection inspection in order to comply with the food safety rules for seasonal foods – the NKFH told MTI on Monday. It is closely monitoring the operation of the market during the festive preparation period so that families can choose from reliable quality, properly labeled products under clean and transparent conditions.

According to the announcement, the priority food product groups include table eggs, fresh lamb and pork, pickled and smoked meat products, chocolate figures and jelly sweets. For these goods, the inspection focuses in particular on food safety, compliance with hygiene conditions, markings and ensuring traceability.

Catering establishments operating in tourist-focused locations, fairs and shopping malls are also inspected. During inspections, the authority’s staff pay special attention to verifying the origin of raw materials, traceability, proper packaging, transportation and storage of food, compliance with the prescribed temperature requirements, and accurate and understandable information for consumers, with particular regard to allergenic substances.

During inspections, the experts focus particularly on gluten- and lactose-free products, as the consumers concerned primarily rely on product labeling when making their purchases. In recent years, the objection rate has been minimal, below 5 percent, but the popularity of these products and their impact on health justify the continuous maintenance of inspections, the NKFH explained in its statement.

They added,

Products suitable for sampling, taking into account the Easter period, include cakes, bread, pancake and pizza powders, biscuits, flours, gluten-free oatmeal, as well as lactose-free yogurts, sour cream, cottage cheese desserts, whipped cream, butter creams, cheeses, chocolates and ice creams.

They also drew attention to the fact that sampling are taking place nationwide, including supermarkets, grocery stores, market halls, markets, organic stores, diet specialty stores, online stores, as well as temporary, seasonal sales outlets.

Government agencies under the professional guidance of the NKFH also monitor compliance with the rules on price display of products related to the Easter holiday season and on sale prices. They are examining, among other things, the clear display of prices, the precise indication of the selling price and the unit price, and the proper application of the provisions relating to the previous price in the case of promotional price displays.

It was emphasized that the aim of the inspections conducted by the NKFH and government agencies is to ensure purchases based on safe and correct information, to filter out deceptive products and to promote fair market behavior.

It was recalled that, based on food safety inspections of commercial and catering establishments conducted in the same period last year, official procedures were initiated in 18 cases, during which more than 3,300 kilograms of unsafe, untraceable products were withdrawn from circulation. The amount of the fine imposed was almost 6 million forints.
