Hungary is becoming an increasingly attractive tourist destination for both domestic and international travelers – the Ministry of National Economy (NGM) stated in its commentary on the latest statistical data on Thursday.

The Central Statistical Office (KSH) data highlighted that more than 1.6 million guests arrived at domestic accommodation facilities in September 2025, which is 8.3 percent more than in the same period in 2024. Accommodations registered 3.8 million guest nights, 5.6 percent more than in September last year.

Domestic tourism broke records, with 15.1 million guests spending a total of 36.7 million guest nights in Hungarian accommodation in the first nine months of the year, the Ministry of Tourism and Culture stated. The number of domestic and foreign guests, as well as the number of guest nights spent by them, has increased significantly.

The ministry noted that in order to further strengthen the tourism sector, the government is providing special support to the sector’s players by establishing the Kisfaludy Tourism Credit Center, and is also launching a development worth more than 1,000 billion forints around Liszt Ferenc International Airport.

According to data from the Central Statistical Office (KSH) and the National Tourism Data Service Center (NTAK), more than 1.6 million guests arrived at domestic accommodation facilities in September 2025, 8.3 percent more than in the same period in 2024. The number of domestic guests was 781 thousand, which is an increase of 5.3 percent compared to last year. 861 thousand guests arrived in our country from abroad, their number exceeding last September by 11 percent.

In September 2025, Hungarian accommodation establishments registered a total of 3.8 million guest nights, 5.6 percent more than in September 2024. Domestic guests spent nearly 1.7 million nights in accommodation establishments, which exceeded last year by 3.3 percent. The 2.1 million guest nights spent by foreign guests exceeded the value of the ninth month of the previous year by 7.5 percent.

In September, 58.6 percent of the country’s total accommodation turnover, 2.2 million nights, was registered in the countryside, which is 3.3 percent more than the result of September last year. Accommodation establishments were able to thank domestic guests for 65.8 percent of the guest nights spent outside Budapest. Lake Balaton was the most popular tourist area in September as well, where accommodations registered 674 thousand guest nights, 7.9 percent more than in September last year.

Accommodation establishments nationwide recorded revenue of 103.7 billion forints in September, 6.2 percent more than at this time last year. A total of 181 billion forints in revenue was generated in catering establishments, which represents a 10.3 percent increase compared to the ninth month of the previous year.

The number of guests arriving at Hungarian accommodation facilities exceeded 15.1 million in the first nine months of the year, which is 6.4 percent more than in January-September 2024. During this time, domestic accommodation establishments registered 36.7 million guest nights, which exceeded the result of the same period last year by 3.2 percent – the NGM cited the data.

It was noted that in order to further strengthen domestic micro and small enterprises operating in the tourism and hospitality sector, the government decided to establish the sector’s own, dedicated financial service institution. From mid-October, the Kisfaludy Tourism Credit Center began issuing working capital and investment loans of 1-10 million under the name KTH Start, which provide extremely favorable terms and conditions with 3 percent fixed interest financing for the developments of smaller players that form the backbone of the sector. With the expansion of the loan programs, approximately 50 billion forints of loans could be granted to thousands of businesses by the end of 2026, the Ministry of Finance estimated.

It was confirmed: the government will not stop there, however, and will launch a development worth more than 1,000 billion forints around the Liszt Ferenc International Airport, within the framework of which Terminal 3 will be built, as well as a fixed-track high-speed railway and a new two-three-lane road network connecting the capital’s airport with Budapest.
