NGM: domestic tourism is booming in autumn – tourist traffic increased by 11 percent in October
Hungary’s popularity among both domestic and international travelers is growing steadily, the Ministry of National Economy (NGM) stated on Thursday.
Citing recent data from the Central Statistical Office, the NGM highlighted that in the tenth month of the year, nearly 1.7 million guests rested in our country, which is 11 percent more than in October last year. Guests spent a total of 3.8 million guest nights in accommodation, which represents a 10 percent increase compared to 2024. Domestic tourism is setting new records this year: in the first ten months of 2025, 16.8 million guests spent a total of 40.5 million guest nights in Hungarian accommodation.
The Ministry of Tourism recalled that in order to ensure that the growth of the sector is sustained, the government has decided on new measures: through the Kisfaludy Tourism Credit Center, it will increase the competitiveness of the smallest tourism service providers with 2.5 percent, favorable interest loans, while launching more than 1,000 billion forints of development around Liszt Ferenc International Airport to further strengthen the tourist appeal of our country.
According to data from the Central Statistical Office and the National Tourism Data Service Center, nearly 1.7 million guests arrived in domestic accommodation in October 2025, an increase of 11 percent more than in the same period in 2024.
The number of domestic guests was 821 thousand, which is an 11 percent increase compared to last year. 833 thousand guests arrived in our country from abroad, their number exceeding the previous year by 12 percent – the NGM returned to the KSH data.
The number of guest nights also increased in October 2025, 10 percent more than in the same period of the previous year, with accommodations registering a total of 3.8 million guest nights. The 1.8 million guest nights spent by domestic guests exceeded the result of last October by 11 percent, while the more than 2 million guest nights spent by foreigners exceeded the result of last October by about 10 percent.
The Ministry of Tourism pointed out that in the tenth month of the year, 56 percent of the country’s total accommodation turnover, 2.1 million nights, were registered in the countryside, which was 7.1 percent more than at this time last year.
Accommodations were able to thank domestic guests for 73.1 percent of the guest nights spent outside Budapest. In October, Lake Balaton was once again the most popular tourist area, with 473,000 guest nights registered, 8.8 percent more than last year.
44 percent of accommodation turnover was registered in Budapest, with approximately 1.7 million guest nights in the capital representing a 14.1 percent increase compared to October 2024.
In October, accommodation establishments nationwide recorded revenue of more than 104 billion forints, 14 percent more at current prices than a year earlier. A total of 186 billion forints in revenue was generated in hospitality establishments in October 2025, which represents an increase of more than 10 percent compared to the tenth month of the previous year.
The first ten months of 2025 brought outstanding results overall: 16.8 million guests arrived at Hungarian accommodation establishments, which was nearly 7 percent more than the same period in 2024. The number of registered guest nights was 40.5 million, which exceeded the result of the first ten months of the previous year by about 4 percent.
In order to ensure that the growth of the sector is sustained, the government decided on new measures:
From mid-October, the Kisfaludy Tourism Credit Center began to issue working capital and investment loans of 1-10 million forints under the name KTH Start, which provide financing with extremely favorable terms and conditions at a fixed interest rate of 2.5 percent for the developments of smaller players that form the backbone of the sector.
In addition, the government is launching a development of more than 1,000 billion forints at the Liszt Ferenc International Airport around, they repeated, adding that as part of this, Terminal 3 will be built, as well as a fixed-track high-speed railway and a new two-three-lane road network connecting the capital’s airport with Budapest.
The government’s goal is to double the airport’s capacity by 2035.
