NGM: purchasing power is increasing, retail trade is expanding – family tax cuts and food vouchers for pensioners are further strengthening turnover
According to the Ministry of National Economy (NGM), the latest retail data reflect the increase in household purchasing power and the recovery in consumption. In its commentary on the Central Statistical Office’s August statistics, the ministry highlighted that family tax cuts and food vouchers for pensioners also contributed to the expansion of turnover.
According to the ministry’s statement, the volume of retail turnover in August 2025 exceeded the same month of the previous year by 2.4 percent, with a 2.3 percent increase in food stores and a 4.9 percent increase in non-food retail. The value of turnover at the national level amounted to 1,735 billion forints.
The Ministry of Economy and Finance justified the positive trend with the government’s economic policy measures. As they wrote, several steps to increase household income have come into effect in recent months – including the increase in family tax benefits, the tax exemption of childcare benefits and the 30,000-forint food voucher sent to pensioners.
According to the ministry, these factors together contribute to a lasting recovery in retail sales and are expected to maintain consumption growth in the remaining months of the year.
