Hungary is an increasingly popular destination for both domestic and international travelers. The government is working to ensure that this trend continues to strengthen in the future, and is therefore doing everything it can to increase the country’s tourist attractiveness, the Ministry of National Economy (NM) wrote in its Wednesday commentary on the latest tourism data.

Number of guest nights spent in tourist accommodations, thousand

Based on data from the Central Statistical Office (KSH), the NGM drew attention to the fact that in July 2025, approximately 2.5 million guests rested in domestic accommodations, which exceeded the result of the same period of the previous year by nearly 2 percent. The number of guest nights approached 6.7 million, of which approximately 76 percent, or nearly 5.1 million nights, were registered in the countryside.

Domestic guests accounted for 71.3 percent of guest nights spent outside Budapest. The government’s goal remains to strengthen the domestic tourism sector, stimulate domestic tourism and support carefree vacations for families.

According to data from the Central Statistical Office and the National Tourism Data Service Center, approximately 2.5 million guests stayed in our country in July 2025, which was nearly 2 percent more than in July last year. The most popular tourist area this July was Lake Balaton again, where 2.2 million guest nights were registered.

The NGM highlighted: Hungary is increasingly popular among international travelers, with a total of 1.1 million foreigners visiting our country in July this year, an increase of nearly 6 percent compared to last year. Budapest was visited in the largest number, where 10 percent more foreigners were hosted than at this time last year.

The ratio of international guest nights in Budapest was also outstanding in July, with approximately 87 percent of the 1.6 million guest nights in the capital being foreign nights. The 1.4 million foreign guest nights measured in July were 3.6 percent higher than the previous year.
