NGM: domestic tourism set another record in August, with nearly 2.8 million guests spending 7.3 million guest nights in Hungarian accommodations

The government is working to ensure that as many Hungarian families as possible can relax, while Hungary is becoming an increasingly attractive tourist destination for international travelers. Therefore, the government is providing special support to the players in the tourism sector, contributing to the continuous growth of domestic tourism performance, the Ministry of National Economy (NGM) wrote in its commentary on the latest tourism statistics on Friday.

As a result, in August 2025, nearly 2.8 million guests arrived at domestic accommodations, 5.2 percent more than in the same period of the previous year. The number of guest nights reached 7.3 million, which is a new high for this month of the year. In August, Lake Balaton was the most popular tourist area, where accommodations registered 2.3 million guest nights, while the region attracted nearly 12 percent more foreign tourists this year than at this time last year, the statement said.

According to data from the Central Statistical Office and the National Tourism Data Service Center, in August 2025, approximately 2.8 million guests arrived at domestic accommodation facilities, 5.2 percent more than in the same period in 2024. The number of domestic guests was nearly 1.5 million, which represents a 1 percent increase compared to last year. 1.3 million guests arrived in our country from abroad, their number exceeding last August by 10 percent.

In the eighth month of the year, domestic accommodation facilities registered a total of 7.3 million guest nights, 3.1 percent more than in August 2024. Domestic guests spent nearly 4 million nights at accommodation facilities, and the approximately 3.4 million guest nights spent by foreign guests exceeded the value of last August by 8.4 percent – the NGM detailed.

The ministry highlighted that in August, 74.3 percent of the country’s total accommodation turnover, 5.4 million nights, was registered in the countryside, which is 1.2 percent more than in August last year. Accommodation establishments were able to thank domestic guests for 68.3 percent of the guest nights spent outside Budapest. Lake Balaton was the most popular tourist area in August as well, where accommodation establishments registered 2.3 million guest nights, while the region attracted nearly 12 percent more foreign tourists this year than at this time last year.

Accommodation establishments nationwide recorded a revenue of 161 billion forints in August, 13.5 percent more than at this time last year. A total of 241 billion forints were generated in August 2025 in hospitality establishments, which represents an 8.9 percent increase compared to the eighth month of the previous year.
