NGM: the SZÉP card remains the driving force of domestic tourism
The SZÉP card continues to be the driving force of domestic tourism – in May this year, nearly 10 percent more was spent on SZÉP cards compared to last year – the Ministry of National Economy (NGM) drew attention in its statement on Thursday.
The government is working to ensure that the financial situation of Hungarian families continuously improves, so that they can spend and travel as much as possible. The government also actively contributes to families’ recreation through the SZÉP card, while further strengthening domestic tourism and supporting the development of hospitality with targeted measures – they added.
In May 2025, the total value of SZÉP card top-ups amounted to nearly 35 billion forints. Cardholders paid nearly 43 billion forints with their SZÉP cards, which represents a 10 percent increase compared to the previous year.
In the fifth month of the year, the number of acceptance points exceeded 157 thousand, which is 7.7 percent more than in May 2024. With the expansion of the number of acceptance points, families can use their cards in an increasingly wider range, which also contributes to their cloudless relaxation – the Ministry of National Economy and Finance highlighted.
In January-May 2025, the total value of SZÉP card top-ups exceeded 204 billion forints, which represents a 5 percent increase compared to the same period of the previous year, while cardholders used 12 percent more, a total of 182 billion forints, from their cards compared to January-May 2024. Thus, 142 billion forints are still available on SZÉP cards – the ministry summarized.
