NGM: the SZÉP card is a significant help for Hungarian families
The SZÉP card is a significant help to Hungarian families, with cardholders spending 14 percent more in April than a year earlier, the Ministry of National Economy (NGM) announced on Friday.
The ministry emphasized that the government is working to ensure that Hungarian families can manage with more and more money, and thus be able to spend more on travel and recreation. The government also supports families’ carefree vacations with the SZÉP card, which also contributes significantly to the performance of domestic tourism.
In April, in addition to SZÉP card top-ups, spending also performed outstandingly, with the former exceeding the level of a year earlier by 35 percent and the latter by 14 percent. In the first four months of the year, nearly 170 billion SZÉP card top-ups helped domestic tourism and families’ domestic recreation, the NGM announced.
In April 2025, the total value of SZÉP card top-ups amounted to more than 64 billion forints, which exceeded the same period of the previous year by 35 percent. Cardholders spent a total of nearly 43 billion forints from their SZÉP cards, 14 percent more than in April 2024.
Between January and April 2025, the total value of SZÉP card top-ups exceeded 169 billion forints, which exceeded the same period of the previous year by nearly 8 percent.
Cardholders used a total of about 140 billion forints from their cards by the end of April, so SZÉP card spending increased by 8 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. The data highlight that the SZÉP card is one of the engines of domestic tourism, which provides the opportunity for domestic travel and recreation for wide segments of the population
