NGM: the government pays special attention to the development of the prices of milk and dairy products
The government is paying special attention to the development of the prices of milk and dairy products, and has also consulted with the Dairy Products Council – the Ministry of National Economy (NGM) announced.
According to the ministry’s statement, keeping food prices under control is a common interest, which is why the government is keeping inflation low and, if necessary, will intervene immediately to protect Hungarian families.
Milk and dairy products are basic foodstuffs that form a decisive part of families’ purchases, so their affordability is of paramount importance.
To this end, the government has consulted with the Milk Interprofessional Organization and Product Council, which brings together producers, processors and retailers, in addition to retailers, and has also considered expanding the online price monitoring system to include additional dairy products
– the NGM indicated.
Milk and dairy products appear in the total inflation consumer basket of the Central Statistical Office with a weight of 3.2 percent, which means that these products account for more than 10 percent of the Central Statistical Office’s food basket. Therefore, the government will continue to take decisive action to ensure affordable basic foodstuffs and affordable milk and dairy products in the future, in order to protect families – the ministry emphasized.
The statement recalled that the government continuously monitors food prices with the help of the online price monitoring system established on July 1, 2023, in order to protect families, keep inflation at a low level, and strengthen retail competition.
According to the latest January data, milk and dairy products have become the most expensive of the foods monitored by the price monitor: milk is 23 percent more expensive, butter and butter cream is 15.5 percent more expensive, sour cream is 14.5 percent more expensive, Trappist cheese is 12.2 percent more expensive, and cottage cheese is 9.8 percent more expensive than a year earlier.
