NGM: the enforcement of consumer rights is also being examined in Christmas markets
Government agencies also inspect the enforcement of consumer rights at Christmas markets, Norbert Eitmann, the consumer protection spokesperson for the Ministry of National Economy (NGM), told reporters at the capital’s Vörösmarty Square Christmas market on Tuesday.
He recalled that government agencies acting under the authority of the consumer protection authority inspect commercial units throughout the year to enforce consumer rights, and they are also present at Christmas markets.
He said that the experts examine, among other things, the display of prices, the fulfillment of the invoicing obligation, unfair commercial practices, the authenticity of measuring instruments and the measurement itself.
He said that the most common mistake is that traders do not display prices correctly.
He drew attention to the fact that both the selling price and the unit price must be displayed correctly, because the consumer must know exactly what amount he has to pay for a given product.
He added that it still happens that consumers are not given an invoice, in which case government officials refer the case to the competent National Tax and Customs Office.
He indicated that it also happens that consumers are tried to deceive with unfair commercial practices, and the consumer protection authority also acts in these cases.
