NGM: Domestic tourism closed another record year in 2025

In 2025, domestic tourism closed another record year: nearly 20 million guests spent about 47 million guest nights in Hungarian accommodations – the Ministry of National Economy (NGM) highlighted in its Wednesday commentary on the latest tourism data.

With wage increases, tax cuts and price increases, the government is contributing to keeping more and more money in families’ pockets, so that they can spend more and more on recreation according to their own decision – they wrote. Hungary’s popularity among both domestic and international travelers is growing steadily. In 2025, nearly 20 million guests stayed in our country, which represents an increase of more than 7 percent compared to 2024. The number of guests, more than ever before, spent about 47 million guest nights in domestic accommodations, which exceeded the record year of 2024 by 4.3 percent – the ministry cited the data.

They emphasized:

In 2025, the number of guests in commercial accommodations in our country showed an increase of nearly two and a half times compared to the average growth rate of the European Union member states. Hungary not only performed well above the EU average, but also left its main competitors behind: the number of foreign guests in our country increased by 12 percent. This is more than double the growth of Austria, more than five times that of Croatia, and significantly exceeds the expansion of the Czech Republic.

Tourism is one of the most important driving forces of the Hungarian economy, accounting for more than 14 percent of GDP and providing a livelihood for nearly 400,000 families. The government aims to further enhance the tourist attractiveness of our country, and therefore strengthens the competitiveness of the smallest tourism service providers with loans at an extremely favorable interest rate of 2.5 percent through the Kisfaludy Tourism Credit Center.

The Ministry of Tourism also drew attention to the fact that the government is not stopping here: on January 26, it launched the KTH Start 2=3 campaign, where catering establishments can apply for additional non-refundable state support – up to 1 million forints – for Start Investment or Working Capital loan applications between 1-2 million forints. In addition, the government has developed a 5+1 action plan worth 100 billion forints, which will help domestic restaurants with tax cuts, wage reductions and preferential loans.

According to data from the Central Statistical Office (KSH) and the National Tourism Data Service Center (NTAK), more than 1.4 million guests arrived at tourist accommodations in December 2025, which exceeded the results of the same period in 2024 by nearly 12 percent – the NGM cited the data in the background attached to its announcement. The number of domestic guests was 604 thousand, 10.1 percent more than in the last month of 2024. 819 thousand guests arrived from abroad, their number exceeding that of December 2024 by 13 percent. A total of 3.2 million guest nights were registered in accommodation establishments, which was 9.2 percent more than in December 2024. Domestic guests spent 1.3 million nights in accommodation establishments, which was 6.6 percent higher than in December 2024. The nearly 2 million guest nights spent by foreign guests exceeded the result of the last month of the previous year by 11 percent.

Based on data from the Central Statistical Office and the National Tourism Administration, it was also cited that more than 19.5 million guests arrived at Hungarian tourist accommodation establishments in 2025, which exceeded the result of 2024 by 7.3 percent. In addition, according to the preliminary estimate of the Central Statistical Office, the guest traffic of non-business accommodation outside the scope of tourist accommodation in 2025 contributed more than 400 thousand people to the total number of guests in the accommodation sector, reaching the 20 million guest traffic target last year.

Among the data, the Ministry of Tourism also highlighted that the number of domestic guests in tourist accommodation was approximately 9.7 million, which is 3.2 percent higher than the previous year. 9.9 million guests arrived from abroad, their number exceeding that of 2024 by almost 12 percent.

In 2025, tourist accommodations registered 46.8 million guest nights, which was 4.3 percent more than in 2024. Domestic guests spent 22.5 million nights in accommodations, which was 1.1 percent more than the turnover in 2024.
