Not only is the price of coffee rising, its consumption is also increasing, according to data from Coca-Cola HBC Hungary
In the period from September last year to the end of August this year, the value of the Hungarian retail coffee market increased by about 1 percent, while the reorganization between the segments continued – said Anita Partali, marketing manager of the coffee business of Coca-Cola HBC Hungary. He added: the amount of ground coffee sold in this period decreased by 3.7 percent, while the volume of coffee beans increased by 1.9 percent and the category of capsule coffees increased by 5.1 percent.
According to the data, during the 12 months ending in August this year, manufacturers and distributors sold a total of 14.3 thousand tons of bean, ground and capsule coffee on the domestic market. Within this, the sales of the company’s coffee business increased by around 17 percent.
Citing data from market researcher Nielsen, the marketing manager said that the value of the Hungarian retail coffee market – excluding instant coffee products – was HUF 77 billion between the first of September 2023 and the end of August 2024, which is 0.9 percent higher than a year earlier.
Anita Partali named the continuous increase in the price of coffee raw materials as one of the biggest challenges affecting the sector, to which all market participants must adapt with a suitable business strategy: the purchase price of arabica coffee beans rose by 19 percent and that of robusta by 45 percent in January-August this year. (Global coffee production in 2023-2024 was 178 million bags, compared to 168.2 million bags in 2022-2023 – a bag contains 60 kilograms.)
Coca-Cola HBC Hungary is present in the premium segment covering 9 percent of the entire retail coffee market, and its two coffee brands have a 2 percent share of the retail market. The company is one of the top three producers of premium coffees in the hotels, restaurants and cafés sector.
