The price of eggs would not go down if the price cap were introduced at the end of April
By Easter, thanks to the price cap, the average consumer price of eggs can be at a predictable level of HUF 90. Market participants do not expect a shortage, but it is not worth waiting until the last days to shop, according to Agroinform.hu’s analysis. The period after Easter would be ideal for introducing a price cap for eggs, as seasonal effects prevent the price of eggs from rising.
Domestic egg producers are able to meet the increasing demands around Easter. Gergely Pákozd, vice president of the Hungarian Egg Hybrid Breeders and Egg Producers Association (Egg Association), told Agroinform.hu:
“We don’t expect any supply problems in the coming weeks. However, we recommend to customers not to leave their shopping until the last minute, because a major rush could cause a momentary shortage for that day. However, the next day there will be eggs on the shelves again, as the hens lay eggs in a predictable way – only not immediately and by any means.”
As a result of the food price freeze extended to eggs on November 9, 2022, the average price of the product has been around HUF 90 in recent months. Given that the price cap will definitely be in effect until April 30, we can count on this price level during the Easter period as well.
