Not a campaign, but regular help: tens of thousands of donations for shelter dogs and cats
The cooperation between SPAR Hungary and the National Animal Welfare Foundation continued in 2025, allowing customers to support dogs and cats living in shelters across the country. During the year, a total of 210 fundraising events were organized in SPAR and INTERSPAR stores for the benefit of animal rescue NGOs.
Last year, dozens of animal protection NGOs regularly participated in the program. The collections were coordinated by the National Animal Welfare Foundation, through which various shelters and animal protection associations were given the opportunity to meet customers in person every month. The amount of donations collected during the year clearly demonstrates the tangible results of the initiative. Customers donated 23,221 kilograms of dry dog food, 16,319 pieces of canned dog food, and 1,200 pieces of dog salami. For the cats, 5,820 kilograms of dry food and 33,286 pieces of canned and pouched food were collected. Donations are essential help in the daily operation of shelters, where the costs of care increase year by year.
“The success of the cooperation between the National Animal Welfare Foundation and SPAR is due to the system built over many years, which is based on continuous communication and close cooperation with civil organizations. Although we know that fewer and fewer people can donate a larger amount, it is important for SPAR that the participating animal welfare organizations can count on us and the support of our customers month by month. We are grateful to all those who help this extremely important work, whether with a package of food or as volunteers with their time,” said Márk Maczelka, Head of Communications at SPAR Hungary.
The number of participating organizations increases year by year, and the frequency of collections depends on the availability of volunteers. Personal presence not only facilitates donations, but also provides an opportunity for customers to learn about the work and volunteers of the given organization.
An important goal of the initiative is to ensure that donations are targeted: donations are always tailored to the current needs of the given organization, whether it is pet food, cleaning supplies or equipment. This flexible, collaborative system is working more and more efficiently based on the experiences of recent years.
The program will continue in 2026, and the locations and times of the current and upcoming collections can be found on SPAR’s dedicated online platform: https://www.sparafenntarthatojovoert.hu/mancsabajban.
The National Animal Welfare Foundation continues to welcome the participation of non-governmental organizations dealing with animal protection, and asks animal-friendly customers to visit the organizations at their locations and donate even a few hours of their time to them, thus supporting their dedicated work.
