It’s not size that matters, it’s partnership: at Dunapack, even small customers receive great attention

Interview with Zoltán Szőnyi, Sales Director at Dunapack Packaging

While more and more manufacturers in the packaging industry are focusing exclusively on high-volume orders, smaller clients are often sidelined. In contrast, Dunapack Packaging has operated for more than a century on the principle that every partner matters. According to Sales Director Zoltán Szőnyi, company size should never be a barrier to accessing the latest manufacturing technologies — which are available at their Dunavarsány plant, opened three years ago.

– How common is it in the packaging industry for players to narrow their product range and focus on large orders for large customers?

– We hear this more and more often. At first glance, portfolio rationalization might seem like a reasonable decision for a manufacturer, but it inevitably leads to a reduced ability to respond flexibly to the needs of small and medium-sized clients. And what does this mean for small businesses? Uncertainty, longer delivery times, and more difficult communication.

– Is this the strategy you follow as well?

– We are taking a different path. At Dunapack Packaging, we believe every customer is important — from small local producers to major international brands. This way of thinking is not new to us: our Csepel plant celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2023, meaning we have a century of experience proving that long-term partnerships and personal relationships create real value. As I like to say: every tree starts as a single shoot. The same is true for customer relationships — what matters is not the size of the first order, but whether it has growth potential, mutual trust, and a shared vision. Many of our key partners today started with just a few boxes — and now they may be market leaders.

– Just like Dunapack in the packaging market. What kind of responsibility does that entail?

– As a market leader, we believe we owe our clients more than just capacity or technology — we owe them a commitment not to let anyone down. Returning to my earlier metaphor: we don’t prune the small branches — we tend to them carefully, trusting they’ll grow into strong trees one day. Perhaps it also helps that, although we are a market leader, our parent company, the Prinzhorn Group, is still a family-owned business, which means we don’t only speak the language of big corporations, but can easily connect with smaller businesses as well.

– What technology supports this approach?

– Our plant in Dunavarsány was opened in 2022 with the aim of offering a long-term, sustainable solution in the packaging sector. The globally advanced technology used there allows us to produce quickly, efficiently, and sustainably. The facility features fully automated material handling, state-of-the-art printing machines, and low-energy systems, all of which significantly reduce our environmental impact.

– What would you say to companies currently seeking a new packaging partner?

– Choosing Dunapack Packaging means more than ordering packaging materials — you’re choosing a reliable, approachable, and partnership-driven team. We build real relationships, not just fill orders. We believe that business is based on mutual trust, attention, and long-term thinking — whether with a domestic family business or an international brand. We plan for the long haul — with every single customer.
