Wheat producer price in Hungary decreased by a quarter

According to the February forecast of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the world can harvest 842 million tons of wheat in the 2025/2026 marketing year, 5 percent more than the previous season. The expected consumption is 824 million tons (+2 percent).

221 million tons (+8 percent) of the crop may be traded, and by the end of the 2025/2026 marketing year, 278 million tons (+7 percent) of wheat may remain in storage. According to Expana’s February information, farmers in the European Union can harvest winter wheat from an area of ​​21.5 million hectares, slightly less than a year earlier. In France, the cold at the beginning of the year was replaced by rapid snow melting and mild, rainy weather. In the member state, the crop can be harvested from 4.6 million hectares (+2 percent) this year. In Germany, wheat may be stored in storage in the summer of 2026 from the same area as last year, 2.9 million hectares. In Poland, wheat occupies a 2 percent smaller area, 2.4 million hectares. At the beginning of February, the temperature dropped again to between -10 and -25 degrees Celsius, which may have an adverse effect on stocks due to the lack of snow cover in the regions of southwestern Poland. In Romania, the wheat area increased by about 3 percent to 2.4 million hectares. In Hungary, Expana experts calculate an area of ​​980 thousand hectares. According to AKI PÁIR data, table wheat was traded at an average producer price of 67.7 thousand forints/ton excluding VAT and transport costs in the third week of February. This price level was 24 percent lower than a year earlier. Feed wheat traded at a producer price of 62 thousand forints/ton (-29 percent) at the same time. On the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME/CBOT), the March wheat quotation ranged between $198 and $217 per ton between February 17 and 27. On the Paris Mercantile Exchange (Euronext/MATIF), the March settlement price of the crop fluctuated between €191 and €198 per ton between February 16 and 27.
