Fish caught in the Sajó River are safe to consume – the National Food Chain Safety Authority (Nébih) announced to MTI on Wednesday.

It was announced that over the past year and a half, the Nébih has continuously examined fish caught in the Sajó River, and based on the laboratory results, it can be stated that their consumption is safe, there is no acute risk, and the level of toxic heavy metals regulated by the limit value also complies with the regulations.

The statement recalled that the Northern Hungarian Fishermen In the summer of 2024, the Association drew the attention of Nébih to the news that the Slovak authorities had banned the consumption of fish caught in the Sajó due to arsenic contamination.

Nébih contacted the Slovak food control authority, and experts took a sample from the part of the Sajó close to the border. In the laboratory, the experts examined the presence of toxic heavy metals from herbivorous and predatory fish. Based on the available information and laboratory test results, Nébih did not recommend the consumption of fish caught from the Sajó in 2024.

It was emphasized that in the year and a half since the announcement, Nébih experts have tested the toxic heavy metal content of the meat of herbivorous and predatory fish caught from the Sajó several times. 26 samples were tested in the Nébih laboratory, and 12 samples were tested for inorganic arsenic in a foreign laboratory. The measurements did not detect toxic heavy metals exceeding the limit value in the caught fish.
