Nébih: authorities apply the disposal solution with the lowest epidemiological risk when treating foot-and-mouth disease
The National Food Chain Safety Authority (Nébih) and local animal health authorities are using the disposal solution with the lowest epidemiological risk, burial, when treating foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), Nébih told MTI on Sunday.
FMD is a highly contagious disease, and immediate emergency measures are put into effect when it appears, the statement said.
Therefore, in the current epidemiological situation, the authorities are not using the transport of animal carcasses to a distant carcass processing plant for safe disposal, but are using burial in a suitable area as close as possible to the outbreak of the disease. Long-distance transport would pose a significantly higher risk for the spread of infection, they explained.
The disposal will take place in Bábolná – in the nearest suitable area of the company entrusted with the disposal – by burial, which is a safe and accepted way of disposing of infected animals – they added.
In addition to its animal health significance, preventing the spread of RSzKF disease is in the national economic interest, so the authorities will continue to apply the methods that best serve the protection and carry the lowest risk without delay and in all cases – the announcement reads.
National Chief Veterinarian Szabolcs Pásztor announced at a press conference in Budapest on March 7 that foot-and-mouth disease has appeared in Hungary. The virus was identified by the laboratory of the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) on a cattle farm in Kisbajcs in Győr-Moson-Sopron County.
