The Hortobágy fish farm delivers one hundred tons of fish to stores every day

Károly Simon said that the country’s largest carp-producing farm sells 1,500 tons of carp annually, half of which is shipped to Romania. Domestic customers are increasingly looking for processed, filleted, sliced ​​fish, which are produced in their own processing plants.

The CEO reminded that the autumn fishing began in September, the fish are already in wintering lakes, from where they are shipped to supermarket chains, markets and their own stores. 80 percent of the fish in Hortobágy are carp, the rest are busa, grass carp, and in smaller quantities predators, mostly catfish. Their herbivorous fish are certified organic, he added.

Károly Simon also said that the 100 percent Hungarian state-owned fish farm, which has been operating continuously since 1916, has a 5,000-hectare operating area of ​​3,000 hectares, and fish are raised in 44 lakes.

Károly Simon added that they have not raised their prices for three years, the live fish from Hortobágy A kilo of carp is sold for 1899 forints, and a kilo of gray catfish for 4000 forints.

Domestic fish consumption has increased slightly in recent years, but the average consumption per capita of 6.5 kilograms per year is still well below the European Union average of 20 kilograms – explained the expert.
