The latest results of the post-registration variety trials of the National Grain Growers’ Association (GOSZ), the Seed Association Interprofessional Organization and Product Council (VSZT), and the National Chamber of Agriculture (NAK) are public, and they help farmers with objective information and data – the three organizations informed in a joint statement sent to MTI on Wednesday.

They explained: although winter wheat took over the leading role of corn last year, the spring-sown crop, grown on approximately 750 thousand hectares, is still a strategically important arable crop in Hungary, and can be used in many areas, from animal feed to food supply to ethanol production. Variety trials contribute greatly to the well-founded variety selection, which is an important component of successful corn production – they justified the operation of the system, which, according to the statement, significantly facilitates the choice of hybrids.

The experimental network is expanding year by year in order to provide evaluable data from as many growing regions as possible

Most recently, in 2025, a total of 40 maize hybrids from 11 variety owners participated in nine locations across the country. The performance of the varieties was tested in Bóly, Hajdúböszörmény, Iregszemcse, Murony, Püski and Szombathely with classical cultivation methods, and in Gyulatanya, Kisbábolna and Makó under irrigated conditions, they added. The results of the 19th national maize post-registration variety trial can be read on the VSZT website. The organizers announced that the national variety trials of GOSZ-VSZT will continue in 2026. The winter wheat and winter rapeseed variety trials started last fall, and the results are expected in the summer. This spring, the 20th national corn post-registration variety trial will begin.
