NAK-Magosz: Brussels would cause serious damage with the planned transformation of the common agricultural policy
Brussels would cause serious damage with the planned transformation of the common agricultural policy (CAP), the National Chamber of Agriculture (NAK) and the Association of Hungarian Farmers’ Associations and Cooperatives (Magosz) announced in a joint statement with MTI on Wednesday.
The statement recalls that the EU debate on the transformation of the common agricultural policy has begun, and as a first step, the European Commission asked a German humanities professor and his board to formulate the initial proposals.
The board – to whose work no farmer organization from Central and Eastern Europe was invited – formulated devastating proposals for the transformation of agricultural subsidies after 2027, including the abolition of area-based subsidies and the reduction of European livestock farming – the statement wrote.
They recalled that NAK and Magosz started collecting signatures in opposition to the EU proposals, and the petition has already been signed by nearly 250,000 people. The two organizations also prepared an impact study on the negative consequences of the planned changes for farmers and consumers.
One of the most important points of the EU proposal package, called the “Strategic Dialogue”, is the elimination of area-based payments. This would put farmers at a significant competitive disadvantage compared to non-EU players – such as Ukraine, Brazil, Morocco – and their number would decrease drastically. The remaining entrepreneurial class would disappear from some villages, and the use of agricultural land would be taken over by large companies, they warned.
