Soaring slaughter pig prices
Data from the Research Institute of Agricultural Economics (AKI) reveals: 585,000 tonnes (live weight) of poultry was slaughtered in Hungary in the first eleven months of 2022. This quantity was 12.7% smaller than in the same period of 2021. According to the Central Statistical Office (KSH), Hungary’s poultry meat export dropped 17.8% in volume to 174,000 tonnes, but export value sales grew by 14.5% to HUF 192bn in January-October 2022. Broiler chicken’s live weight price jumped 53% to HUF 506/kg.
KSH says Hungary’s like-for-like live pig export increased by 9.5% to 30,000 tonnes in January-October 2022. Our main markets were Romania, Austria and the Netherlands. Live pig import diminished by 9% to 54,000 tonnes. Hungary’s biggest suppliers were Slovakia, Croatia, Germany and the Czech Republic. The production price of Hungarian slaughter pig – calculated without VAT and shipping costs – was HUF 832/kg in December 2022, and this price was 82% higher than one year earlier. In the first two weeks of 2023 the price was HUF 814/kg, 72% above the level of the first two weeks in 2022. //
