István Nagy: campaign to promote rabbit meat consumption launched

The Hungarian Rabbit Interprofessional Organization and Product Council, together with its Spanish counterpart, has launched a three-year campaign with a budget of 4.2 million euros to promote the consumption of rabbit meat and increase its market presence by 2-5 percent, announced Minister of Agriculture István Nagy on Friday at the National Agricultural and Food Exhibition and Fair (OMÉK) in Budapest.

The Minister said that rabbit meat is a quality 21st-century source of protein, has favorable physiological parameters, low fat content, and is the only type of meat that is free of allergenic substances. In addition, it is a type of meat produced in a traditional, healthy and sustainable way, and is a tasty, diverse cultural ingredient. He highlighted that it is produced according to the strictest EU food safety and animal welfare standards.

Péter Ondré, CEO of the Agrármarketing Centrum, said: rabbit breeding has a long tradition in Hungary, and we can contribute to the survival of the sector and livestock keepers by consuming Hungarian products.

Róbert Juráskó, President of the Rabbit Product Council, highlighted: Hungary is the world’s second largest exporter of rabbit meat, with exports of 30 million euros per year, while domestic sales are 410 tons.
