István Nagy: daily bread and farmers’ livelihoods cannot be jeopardized
Daily bread and the livelihood of farmers cannot be jeopardized, the government will protect the interests of farmers, the Minister of Agriculture stated in his Facebook post on Wednesday.
According to István Nagy, Ukraine’s accession to the EU is a serious risk, the consequences of which could be unpredictable and irreversible, and would drastically change European agriculture. Agricultural subsidies would also be significantly reduced, which would ruin Hungarian farmers. This should not be allowed to happen, he stressed.
The Minister explained that Western big business owns large farms of several hundred thousand hectares in the neighboring country, and these do not have to meet the strict EU production conditions at all. European agriculture cannot compete with this system, which is based on completely different historical traditions and operates in a different structure, he said.
The Minister of Agriculture emphasized that we must stand up for the preservation of Hungarian farmers and European food production. The government will continue to protect the interests of farmers, because we must not let Ukraine’s accession crush Hungarian agriculture and make it impossible for producers to make a living, István Nagy stated.
