Better educated wine consumers
Consumers of wine are changing, or developing or getting easier to influence – depending on the way we look at them. Changes are slow, but apparent. Today’s wine drinkers want different wines for different occasions. They know more about wine than in the past. They want a good price/value ratio for everyday consumption and a trendy brand for special occasions. A bag in box for the family excursion and a Chianti for a romantic dinner. Wines is increasingly adjusted to lifestyle. What are wine drinkers looking for in wine? Macho wines are on their way out. Educated consumers want a little more complex experience, with fruity flavours and flowery fragrances. The complexity of Pinot noir is increasingly preferred to the strong character of Cabernet Sauvignon. Rose wines are also on their way in, especially in summer months. Hungarian ecological conditions are ideal for producing rose and quality is continuously improving. Rose is also becoming popular among champagnes as its freshness and fruity fragrance enhance the experience of drinking champagne. It is good news for Hungarian winemakers that white wine is making a market comeback. The boom will soon be here. Sauvignon blanc has taken the lead from Chardonnay, but Riesling and Szürkebarát are also regarded as representing high quality. Today’s consumers are looking for adventure, especially intellectual adventure and the health trend also favours foods which require white wine.
