MTÜ: the number of visitors to Balaton in July exceeds the numbers before the coronavirus epidemic
So far, there have been more than 700,000 guests at Lake Balaton in the high season, and thanks to them, the hotels registered 2.4 million nights between June 1 and mid-July, thus reaching 98.6 percent of the turnover of 2019. The turnover in July was already more than 3 percent above the previous year. The development of bookings also promises a good start to the high season, the hotels have already registered another 1.3 million nights for the rest of the summer, the Hungarian Tourism Agency (MTÜ) told MTI on Thursday.
According to the announcement, during the days of the July heatwave, crowds sought relief on the water’s edge, which also benefited the traffic of Lake Balaton. “Even this summer, we can rightly say that Lake Balaton is the beach of the Hungarians, since our compatriots accounted for the vast majority of traffic in the area, 73 percent.” In accordance with national trends, the number of foreign guest nights also increased. For example, Balaton’s foreign visitor traffic has exceeded last year by 14 percent. Until the middle of July, accommodation revenues in Balaton exceeded the value measured at this time last year by almost 8 percent, approaching HUF 22 billion. 11 percent of this was paid with Szép Kártya.
