Milk chocolate rabbit figures and eggs dominate the market
According to the Nielsen Retail Index, retail sales of Easter sweets and gift packages almost reached the HUF 3 billion level last year. This was the result of 11 percent higher sales than in the previous season. In terms of volume 7 percent more chocolate figures and packages were sold (850 tons), from which figures’ share was 85 percent.
For many years chocolate eggs had been the most popular but in the last two years chocolate rabbits advanced to the number one position, as regards value: last year rabbits’ market share was 39 percent and eggs were at 38. Demand for milk chocolate kept increasing and last year it represented 66 percent of sales, while dark chocolate’s share was 8 percent; nougat’s share fell to 23 percent last year and the rest of sales was realised by white chocolate figures. Last year hypermarkets realised 45 percent of total volume sales, while the share of the 401-2,500m² channel grew to 40 percent.
