The MNB Vice-President: the series of base rate increases in 2022 will continue
Prolonged inflationary pressures justify long base rate hikes, and the monthly series of rate hikes will continue in 2022, Virág Barnabás, vice-president of the Magyar Nemzeti Bank (MNB) said in an online background discussion following the interest rate decision.
Core inflation may remain above the tolerance band for 2022 as a whole, rising to close to 6 percent in the coming quarters. According to the council’s assessment, the “main enemy” is still inflation, and in the medium term the most important thing is to anchor inflation expectations in line with the inflation target, he explained.
