What can we do as parents beyond the world of school canteens and cafeterias?

Back-to-school season is not only about supplies but also about children’s eating habits. According to the Hungarian Dietetic Association (MDOSZ), today one in four primary school children is overweight, while malnutrition is also on the rise. Since taste and habits are formed in childhood, parents and teachers play a key role: what children see at home or at school will shape their later food choices.

MDOSZ tips for everyday routines:

  • Never skip breakfast! It should provide 20–25% of daily energy and nutrients.

  • Healthy snacks: seasonal fruit, vegetables, yogurt, wholegrain sandwiches, or homemade granola.

  • Buffet strategy: agree in advance on healthier choices – water, juice, or sandwiches instead of sweets.

  • Avoid rewarding with sweets, opt for fruit or homemade treats instead.

  • Plan ahead: use the weekly school menu to balance daily meals, adding missing fruit, vegetables, or dairy.

  • Stay hydrated, especially on sports days.

  • Cook together: children are more likely to eat what they helped prepare.

Experts emphasize that parental role modeling is key. If the family naturally consumes fruit, vegetables, and water, children will adopt the same habits. As a practical tool, MDOSZ recommends the OKOSTÁNYÉR® guidelines for children, which clearly show the right portions, ratios, and calorie needs.
