There will be ATMs in every settlement, and cash withdrawals will also be more convenient
ATM services will become available in all Hungarian settlements, while the rules for cash withdrawals will also become more favorable, the Ministry of National Economy announced. According to the legislative amendment proposals before the Parliament, not only must a banknote dispenser be installed in every settlement, but it must also be ensured that the public can withdraw up to 150,000 forints in a single amount free of charge.
Based on the amendments, the President of the National Bank of Hungary will designate which service provider is obliged to install an ATM in which settlement, according to the schedule specified in the decree of the Minister of National Economy. The aim is to ensure the widest possible availability of cash and to continue to provide cash withdrawals free of charge for consumers.
Currently, according to the regulations, cash withdrawals of up to 150,000 forints per month can be made free of charge from any banknote dispenser, whether operated by the bank itself or by third parties. The free of charge also covers all additional fees, such as transaction fees. Since January 1, 2025, free cash withdrawals have also been available at post offices.
The new bill would further improve the situation: in the future, it will not be possible to limit the amount that can be withdrawn at one time below the free limit of 150,000 forints, so in practice everyone will have seamless access to the full amount in a single transaction.
