Melted cheese is popular in every culture
Melted cheese dishes are a global favorite, especially in the cold winter months. From Swiss fondue to Georgian khachapuri and American mac & cheese, each dish has its own rich history and cultural significance. Some, like raclette, originate from alpine regions where shepherds melted cheese over an open fire, while others, like queso fundido, have Mexican roots and are enjoyed with tortillas and spicy toppings.
Key highlights from the list include:
- Fondue (Switzerland): A communal dish where bread is dipped into melted cheese mixed with wine and garlic.
- Raclette (France & Switzerland): Semi-hard cheese melted and scraped onto potatoes, meats, and vegetables.
- Käsespätzle (Austria & Germany): A cheesy egg noodle dish, similar to mac & cheese but with alpine cheese varieties.
- Queso fundido (Mexico): A rich melted cheese dish, often mixed with chorizo and served with tortillas.
- Khachapuri (Georgia): A boat-shaped bread filled with molten cheese and topped with an egg.
- Pizza Quattro Formaggi (Italy): A four-cheese pizza featuring mozzarella, gorgonzola, parmesan, and fontina or taleggio.
- Mac & Cheese (USA & UK): A creamy, baked pasta dish with a history dating back to 18th-century England.
Mac & Cheese Meets Fast Food in Budapest
In celebration of melted cheese dishes, KFC in Budapest has introduced a mac & cheese-inspired menu, featuring cheese-filled versions of its popular sandwiches and wraps. The promotion, running from February 13 to 16, includes a special Warm Spot Game at the Deák tér location, where visitors can interact with a light-up gaming wall while enjoying their meals.
