MIHAS 2021: Sign up for the biggest virtual exhibition of the Halal sector
In today’s interconnected global economy, I am sure we have heard, at the least in brief, about the Halal economy. Casually known as a set of Islamic rules about meats, but the enthusiasts among us will know that the Halal sector is more intricate, encompassing a variety of sectors, and now is considered big business
For starters, the composition of the Halal sector itself is a wide spectrum and is not only confined to food and beverage. Aside from food and beverage, it includes various sub sectors from cosmetics and pharmaceutical to finance and travel. The 12 halal sectors carried under MIHAS 2021 are Food & Beverages, Education, Pharmaceuticals, Services & Enablers, Franchise, Modest Fashion, Islamic Finance, Cosmetics & Personal Care, Media & Recreation, Muslim-friendly Travel, eCommerce and Food Technology
In terms of the market size, according to Pew’s Research Centre, there are approximately 1.9 billion Muslims in the world today, making-up around 24% of the world’s population. By 2060, this number is expected to increase to 3 billion, and will represent about 31% of the global population. Dinar Standard’s ‘State of the Global Islamic Economy Report 2020/21’ had further described that Muslims had spent USD2.02 trillion in 2019 across food, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, fashion, travel and media sectors, and this figure is expected to grow to USD2.4 trillion by 2024.
The host country, Malaysia which aspires to the global Halal hub, once again leads the Global Islamic Economy Indicator (GIEI) for the 8th consecutive year, reflecting a robust Islamic Economy ecosystem, leading the pack in pioneering the growth of the Islamic economy in various sectors including food & beverages, Islamic finance, travel, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.
