What would school children put in their baskets if they had to do shopping for the weekend?
Last year, the education program against childhood obesity of the National Association of Hungarian Dietitians expanded to a national level. With the support of the Auchan Foundation, the GYERE® – Children’s Health Program is taking place simultaneously in the elementary schools of 24 Hungarian settlements, which teaches the principles of good nutrition and lifestyle to elementary school students, more than 5,000 children. The experts wanted to assess the extent to which the students are aware of what they should buy for a healthy and balanced diet during a weekend shopping trip with the call for tenders launched as part of the project.
The GYERE® Program was created with the aim of adapting the international EPODE model to promote the development of an active and healthy lifestyle in smaller, local communities and its long-term maintenance. Under the professional guidance of Hungarian dieticians, the program is now taking place simultaneously in 24 towns where there is an Auchan store, because the project is fully supported by the Auchan Foundation. At the end of last year’s school year, more than 5,000 elementary school students started learning the curriculum compiled by dieticians. So far, large food categories such as grains, milk and milk products, and eggs have been introduced. And in the first semester of this school year, they learned all the important things about vegetables, fruits, meat, fish and sweets. In the following, students will learn about oils, fats, the correct consumption of liquids and the correct proportions, but they will also learn in detail why the food label is important, how they can find out about it, so that they can later make an informed decision about what goes into their basket with all the necessary information .
