Meteorological Service: the ear plants would require additional moisture

Additional rain would be needed for the even emergence and development of the sown ears of corn, but no precipitation is expected in the next week, the National Meteorological Service wrote in its agrometeorological analysis on Thursday.

According to the analysis, in the past week, the country’s weather has temporarily become a bit more busy compared to the first half of October, more or less precipitation fell, typically in Transdanubia and the northern part of the country, but the amount exceeding 5 millimeters only fell in a few places. In the last three weeks, there has been practically only as much rain as in the last few days, and this is again significantly, 20-35 millimeters less than the usual amount at this time. The rainfall of the past month, even with the rains at the end of September, is less than the average for many years in a large area, especially in the northwestern part of the country and in the Tiszántúl and the Southern Great Plain, less than usual precipitation fell, they wrote. They added: the part of the soil close to the surface is becoming drier, the moisture content in the northeastern part of Transdanubia and the Great Plain has dropped below 50 percent in proportion to the amount of water that can be used by plants, but there are areas where this value does not even reach the critical 40 percent. In the northern and southwestern parts of the country, the moisture supply of the soils is good, but in the Kisalföld and the Alföld, the near-surface and deeper layers are both dry, they wrote.

According to the analysis, the temperature has moved within a fairly wide range over the past week

Overall, it was typically 3-5 degrees higher than usual at this time. They added that until mid-October there was enough moisture in the soil for the sowing of autumn ears of corn, but since then the soil layer near the surface has become increasingly dry. The recent weak rains in the Great Plain did not provide enough moisture for a nice, even rise. More rain would be needed for the even development of the ear plants, but in the next week we are looking for quiet autumn weather with significant precipitation and no cooling.
