Artificial intelligence and religion – does it support or distance you?
Encountering religion and experiencing religion is no exception to the spread of artificial intelligence. Does it help young people turn to religion or not? Is the community experience damaged? What exactly happens in this process? In recent times, several studies have been published on how AI appears in the religious life of young people and what effects it has on them. The Saint Thomas Aquinas Ecumenical Academy of Public Life has examined this issue.
Chat programs controlled by artificial intelligence are increasingly popular among young people, whether it is for collecting information, generating images, and so on. The emergence of the tool naturally also affects religious experience and obtaining information about religion.
Digital spirituality: new paths for generation Z
According to the latest research, members of generation Z are increasingly looking for spiritual guidance on the Internet, and this phenomenon has become even more pronounced with the rise of artificial intelligence tools. Religious influencers on social media platforms, especially TikTok, are promoting religious lifestyles and helping young people find their way to their faith. This generation is more open to religious conversions, and many are turning to Christianity, but they often experience their faith not in a traditional, institutional form, but as a personal spiritual quest. According to research by the Pew Research Center, the use of religious and spiritual apps is a growing trend in the United States, especially among younger generations. Apps that offer daily verses, prayers, or spiritual practices have become popular among young people, and they often find them inspiring or faith-strengthening. The example of the YouVersion Bible App illustrates this phenomenon well: the platform has more than 500 million users worldwide and is particularly popular among young people due to its daily verses, personalized reading plans, and community features.
