Magazine: Is Hungary a wine drinking nation?
Only 46 percent of Hungarians drink wine regularly. Our target group index (TGI) survey reveals that the dominance of men is smaller among wine drinkers than in the case of other alcohol categories. Hungarian adults typically start drinking wine above the age of 30. Back in 2015-2016 there were 1.8-1.9 million wine drinkers in Hungary, but by 2017 their number reduced to 1.6 million.
As for wine types, reds Bull’s Blood and Blaufrankisch are the most popular, followed by white wine Muscat. The typical wine drinker has 2-3 types of wine. Tokaj, Lake Balaton and Villány are the most popular wine regions. It is noteworthy that the popularity of buying wine online is growing. What is more, those consumers who buy online are usually better-off and more willing to experiment. Based on the results of the TGI survey, we can say that the biggest wine drinkers are those who belong to the group of ‘consumer elite’. //
