The state banned the purchase of Alföldi Tej
The Hungarian state has prevented a foreign group of companies – according to market information, a Greek company – from acquiring a 100 percent stake in Alföldi Tej Kft., the Ministry of National Economy (NGM) announced. According to the ministry’s justification, the dairy sector is of strategic importance, and therefore the transaction was not approved in order to preserve sovereignty and protect security of supply.
Alföldi Tej accounts for about 20 percent of the purchase of domestic raw milk, so according to the ministry, the foreign acquisition of ownership could have caused market disruptions and risks. The foreign company submitted its offer on June 5, 2025, which was still assessed under the scope of the pre-emption right decree previously introduced by the government. The regulation expired in August, but it was still applied to ongoing cases.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the state has the option to exercise its pre-emptive right, but they are currently examining whether they will purchase Alföldi Tej themselves.
