Genetically modified potatoes cannot be marketed in the EU
In its Friday's judgment, the Luxembourg-based European Court of Justice annulled the decisions of in the European Commission, which authorized the marketing of genetically modified potato called Amflora for industrial and manufacturing purposes, and also approved to prepare feed from the potatoes. According to Budai Gyula, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs in the Rural Development Ministry, the decision is a clear confirmation that Hungary is on the right track.
Under the previous authorizations, Amflora traces could have been in other foods and animal feeds. The licences were attacked by Hungary at the the Luxembourg-based European Court of Justice, claiming that the GM potato is risk to human and animal health. The Hungarian position was also supported by France, Luxembourg, Austria and Poland. (MTI)
