TikTok is regulated by the Economic Competition Authority in order to protect children
The commitment imposed by the Economic Competition Authority (GVH) for TikTok may also have a global impact. As a result of an investigation by the Hungarian national competition authority, the Chinese-owned video sharing service provider registered in the United States was forced to undertake a series of measures to ensure that TikTok’s communication improves, consumers learn about the features of the platform and can make more informed decisions about the service.
TikTok is a widely available video-sharing social network service, which also has a significant number of users in Hungary, including children. In 2020, the GVH launched an investigation against the Chinese-owned service provider registered in the United States because it made it likely that the global company did not inform consumers of essential information about the operation of the online platform with the professional care expected in accordance with the principle of good faith and fairness – such as about the scope of data handled during the use of the service and its use.
The procedure of the GVH ended with a commitment, which is possible based on the voluntary commitments of the company involved in the domestic service, TikTok Technology Ltd., without the competition authority establishing a violation or the lack thereof.
Through the commitment accepted by the Competition Council of the GVH, measures will be taken that, even in the case of constantly changing communication content, contractual conditions, operating characteristics and legal environment, more directly ensure that TikTok’s communication improves, and that Hungarian consumers really get to know TikTok’s features, and thus making more informed consumer decisions about the service.
