A new 4900 qm market hall in Budapesti Nagybani Piac
Budapesti Nagybani Piac opened in the summer of 1991. This facility is the largest wholesale market of fresh fruits and vegetables in Hungary. It has replaced the Bosnyák tér market which had both retail and wholesales functions, but had clearly become obsolete by the late 1980’s. The market is operated by Budapesti Nagybani Piac Zrt. The Budapest Local Government has a 61 per cent share in the company. The wholesale market accounts for 30 per cent of total sales of domestically produced fruits and vegetables in Hungary. Two-thirds of total imports are also delivered here. The total are of the market is 32 hectares, complete with 26,500 square meters of warehouses, 150 roofed stands and 1250 open stands. 180 wholesale businesses are located in the market. A 1,200 square meter refrigerated warehouse and a 2,800 square meter logistic centre was completed in 2003. A 4,000 square mater logistic warehouse was also completed in 2006. A 4,900 square meter market hall, built at a cost of over HUF 1 billion was completed in January 2008, where in addition to fruits and vegetables, fish and meat is also sold. The intention of BNP Zrt. is to maintain its position in Hungary and to become a regional player in the Central European region.
