German drugstore chain BIPA opens its first store in Romania
The German drugstore chain BIPA opened its first Romanian store on January 22, reports profit.ro.
The company, which belongs to the REWE group, announced its entry into the Romanian market in May last year. BIPE’s first Romanian drugstore is operating in a shopping mall in Bucharest.
“We are in an expansion phase, in the coming years REWE Group will invest an amount of hundreds of millions of euros in Romania in the BIPA and Penny chains. The expansion in Romania is not only a huge opportunity for the Austrian BIPA brand, but also an additional presence for the REWE Group in Central and Southeastern Europe”
– profit.ro quotes the German retail company’s statement. REWE plans to open 20-25 drugstores in Romania this year.
After the German dm drogerie markt, this is the second multinational drugstore chain on the Romanian market.
dm operates more than 160 stores in the country, and in the 2024/2025 financial year it achieved sales of 2.156 billion lei (about 163 billion forints), an increase of 21.77 percent compared to the previous year.
BIPA was founded in Vienna in 1980. REWE acquired it in 1996. It entered the Croatian market in 2007. BIPA currently operates more than 700 stores, and its sales revenue exceeded 1 billion euros for the first time in 2024.
Rewe has been present in Romania since 1999, when it entered the market with the Billa supermarket chain, and in 2001 with Penny. In 2017, Carrefour acquired Billa’s Romanian stores.
