A surprise in the ranking of international hotel chains: the big names underperformed
A survey of international hotel chains produced surprising results, showing that lesser-known Spanish brands performed exceptionally well, while globally known chains such as Hilton, Wyndham or Holiday Inn were unable to compete. In the survey involving more than 2,000 respondents, the guests evaluated their experiences over the past year based on ten different aspects, on a five-star scale. The satisfaction was influenced, among other things, by the cleanliness, the comfort of the beds, the customer service and the price-value ratio, the Pénzcentrum points out.
Chains at the bottom of the rankings include names such as Hilton-owned Hampton, which ranked second worst with a customer score of just 58%. The Which? according to its report, Hampton by Hilton received just two stars in five categories, including value for money, quality of bathrooms, food and drink, public spaces and decor. French hotel chain Campanile finished at the bottom of the list with a score of 57%, despite room rates being low, averaging around £64.
Three Spanish brands tied at the top of the rankings: Iberostar, Paradores Hotels and Riu received a customer score of 85%, winning the ‘Which? Recommended Provider” status. Iberostar and Paradores also received the “Great Value” badge as special recognition, as guests say both brands offer excellent value for money. Originally owned by a Mallorcan shoemaking family, the Iberostar hotel group was praised by guests surveyed for its “first class” customer service and “beautiful” locations.
Paradores Hotels offer a special experience in Spain’s most impressive historic buildings, such as castles and monasteries. And the Riu chain stood out with its impressive food and beverage offering: guests gave five stars to the quality buffets and the varied specialty restaurants, including sushi and steak dishes.
