Price of swine also rising
Trends in the world markets of meat and poultry are monitored regularly by the Agricultural Business Research Institute (AKI). Data from the Market Price Information System (PÁIR) of KSH and AKI can be useful for even short term business decisions. Hungary increased its export of cattle and beef in the beginning of 2008, turning the balance of trade positive. The price of cattle has risen since January, but is still below the EU average. The price of domestic swine intended for slaughter was up by 32 per cent on the 21st week, compared to the same week of 2007. The production of eggs for human consumption has been falling in the EU for years and this trend is expected to continue. Imports from non-EU countries account for only 10 per cent of the total quantity of eggs in the EU market. Though the production of eggs has been decreasing in Hungary as well, export was significantly higher in the first two months of 2008, than it had been in earlier years.
