McDonald's for sustainable growth
McDonald's has been seeking for years to use less and less natural resources in its restaurants. Thanks to the company's energy conservation program, the water usage significantly decreased, despite the increase in the number of restuarants.
In 1995, a McDonald's restaurant used an average of 20 cubic meters of water per day, nowadays it is decreased by 60 percent, to 8 cubic meters. 15 years ago, the company operated 37 fast-food restaurants in Hungary. Their total daily water consumption was 740 cubic meters. Currently the 100 domestic restaurants use about a total of 800 cubic meters of water per day. If the company did not seek to have the water-saving solutions, the 100 units would use 1200 cubic meters more per day. This daily volume is equal to the 12 years water consumption of an average Hungarian household.
