The joint food rescue initiative of the Hungarian Food Bank Association and Wolt has been running for almost a year, with the aim of ensuring that food left over from restaurants, but still of high quality, does not go to waste, but is instead delivered to families and institutions in need. The initiative was launched in July 2024, and since then more than 38 thousand portions of food have been delivered with the help of dozens of partners.

The essence of the project is that restaurants – after they see by the afternoon how many portions are left from the daily menu – notify the Food Bank. Based on this, the Association organizes the delivery together with Wolt, depending on the number of portions, by bicycle or car courier. Wolt’s courier partners pick up the meals from the selected restaurants and then deliver them to the appropriate locations, such as homeless shelters and maternity homes, under the coordination of the Food Bank.

“At Wolt, we believe that the technology and infrastructure we use in urban logistics on a daily basis is not only suitable for serving customers, but also for helping our communities together. This collaboration is a perfect example of how to connect restaurants and those in need so that not a single serving of food goes to waste,” said Orsolya Hartyányi, CEO of Wolt Hungary.

Over the past year, renowned partners such as Kiosk, Jazz Event, KÖTÉNY and Up Hotel Budapest have joined the initiative. The goal is for even more restaurants and catering establishments to join in the near future and for even more meals to be delivered to those in need.

“A particularly important milestone for the Food Bank is that, thanks to the strategic cooperation with Wolt Drive, we have been able to rescue food from a segment that was previously inaccessible to us since last year. We are confident that thanks to this, we can achieve a further significant increase in the amount of donated food this year, thus providing enormous help to those in need,”

added Balázs Cseh, President of the Hungarian Food Bank.
