While in 2023 there were still 95 students studying in the undergraduate and higher vocational training of viticulture and winemaking engineering, the number of students increased by 17 percent in 2024 and by another 5 percent in 2025, and has now reached 116 people – Eszter Szilágyi-Tréba announced after summarizing the statistical data. While 66 applicants selected the Sárospatak-based Tokaj-Hegyalja University for the viticulture and winemaking engineering program in the 2022 general admission process, 117 chose the institution in 2023, 95 in 2024, and 91 in 2025, he added. He said that, based on data from the Statistical Data Collection Program (OSAP), the institution’s total student population is also continuously expanding: the number of students at the country’s youngest higher education institution increased by 25 percent in 2024 and by a further 15 percent in 2025, which now exceeds 1,230 people.
The increase in staff has also increased the institution’s national importance
At the last general meeting of the Hungarian Rectors’ Conference, the university was reclassified from the previous category 1 to category 2, thus the institution now participates with two voting rights in the most important professional decision-making forum of the higher education system – announced Eszter Szilágyi-Tréba. In addition to the training of viticulture and winemaking, the institution also provides training in the undergraduate programs of infant and young child education, farming and management, special education, kindergarten teacher, primary school teacher, tourism and hospitality and IT program planning, and in the master’s program, wine and beverage market management, children’s culture, cultural heritage studies, tourism management and business development are available.
