Strawberries will remain expensive until May
For a long time, we considered strawberries as a seasonal fruit, and we were already preparing for the beginning of summer to enjoy the inimitable taste experience that this berry (also) provides, now strawberries have also become four seasons, that is, there is hardly a time when they are not available.
“In Hungary, strawberry harvesting starts between April 10-20 in greenhouses and heated foils. This period can even be earlier in the case of a sunny, early spring period. In unheated growing equipment, we can count on the start of harvesting in the middle of April, in the second half of April. So from then on there are already Hungarian strawberries on the market, but the Hungarian crop only appears in May, with the harvesting of the field crops, and – depending on the weather – the season ends in the first half or middle of June”
Ferenc Apáti, the president of FruitVeb, told Index.
Overall, it can be said about the year 2022 that the producers had a particularly bad year compared to the previous two years. The unit cost of production has soared, while selling prices have remained essentially unchanged.
