More than 6 billion people worldwide consume milk and milk products, and the global average is 87 kg per person per year, according to FAO 2021 data. During the last 60 years, the annual consumption of milk per person has increased by about 12 kilograms, while in 2021 a total of 940 million tons of milk were produced worldwide. Milk production and consumption show significant differences between different regions of the world.

Hungary consumes much more milk than the world average: in 2021, our annual milk consumption per capita was 182 kilograms, which means almost half a liter of milk per day. This puts our country at the forefront of milk consumption, while countries such as Denmark (402 kg/person) and Montenegro (396 kg/person) lead the list of milk consumers. On the other hand, the countries that consume the least amount of milk include, for example, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (0.9 kg/capita) and Mozambique (1.8 kg/capita).

Milk production is also a decisive sector at the world level. India is the largest producer of milk, producing 214 million tonnes in 2022, accounting for 23% of global production. The United States of America and Pakistan follow in the ranking, with annual production of 103 and 63 million tons.

Milk production in Hungary is also outstanding: in 2022, we produced more than 2 million tons of milk, and the annual milk yield per cow was 6,300 kg, which ranks us 16th in the world. The biggest players on the Hungarian market include Sole-Mizo, Alföldi Tej and Tolnatej, which play a decisive role in the domestic dairy industry.

Milk consumption and milk production continue to play a decisive role in the food supply worldwide. Although consumption and production vary significantly from country to country, the demand for dairy products is constantly increasing, which presents new challenges to the global dairy industry. Hungary occupies a position better than the global average both in terms of consumption and production, and may remain an important player in the milk market in the future.
