Food production cannot be separated from the land, because then we would lose our culture, which is why our country bans the production and distribution of lab-grown meat in Hungary – announced István Nagy, Minister of Agriculture on his social media page.

The Minister emphasized that we must insist that food production be linked to the land, because this is the basis of our traditions and culture, if we move away from this, we will lose our identity. The spread of meat produced in laboratory conditions would result in a lifestyle change that would completely upset European culture, which we cannot allow – he added.

The Minister also mentioned that there are many concerns regarding meat produced in laboratories

A significant proportion of the food consumed is incorporated into the human body. Consequently, everything must be done to exclude possible negative effects. Our country has examined the issue of artificial meat from all sides and has also subjected the regulation to the necessary EU procedures. Our position has not changed even after these were concluded, the strictest possible regulation is needed. We will only allow its use for medical and veterinary purposes, and in all other cases we will strictly prohibit the production and distribution of artificial meat in our country.

The Minister of Agriculture stated that normality, traditions and the work of farmers who have both feet on the ground must be appreciated

The national government is committed to food production linked to the farmland and to strengthening the countryside. Some people have distanced themselves from nature, and a false romanticism is developing regarding wildlife. The majority of society must understand that without farmers there is no food and no future. Artificial meat is a fabrication, and we insist on our culture. Instead of incubation meat farming, let us choose safe domestic foods – István Nagy underlined.
